Doing a walk-around before departing in your RV is a critical safety step that helps prevent costly damage and dangerous mistakes. Here's a simple guide to what you should check every single time before hitting the road:
RV Walk-Around Checklist 1. Exterior Visual Inspection- Look for anything hanging, loose, or damaged.
- Check for fluid leaks beneath the RV.
- Make sure all slide-outs are fully retracted and locked.
- Confirm slide topper awnings are retracted properly.
- Retract electric/manual steps completely.
- Retract all awnings and ensure they are locked in place.
- Lower TV, satellite, or Wi-Fi antennas.
- Close all roof vents, windows, and skylights.
- Confirm all storage compartment doors are latched and locked.
- Check that the main entry door is secure.
- Disconnect and stow:
- Electrical cord
- Freshwater hose
- Sewer hose
- Any cable/satellite connections
- Check for proper inflation.
- Look for cracks, bulges, or visible damage.
- Make sure lug nuts are tight.
- Double-check tow bar, hitch pins, safety chains, and brake connections.
- Test trailer brake lights and signals.
- Remove all wheel chocks.
- Retract stabilizer jacks and leveling blocks.
- Test brake lights, turn signals, and running lights.
- Replace any non-functioning bulbs before departure.
