Keeping your RV Clean
Maintaining a clean RV is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience. A regular cleaning schedule not only keeps the living space pleasant but also helps preserve the longevity of your vehicle's interior and exterior components.
Interior Cleaning ChecklistRegularly cleaning the interior prevents the buildup of dust, dirt, and moisture, which can be particularly problematic in a confined space.
Kitchen and Dining Area- Wipe down surfaces: After every meal, use a multi-surface cleaner to wipe down the countertops, stove, and table. This prevents food spills from hardening.
- Clean the refrigerator: Every few days, check for expired food and wipe down the interior shelves to control odors and sticky residue.
- Handle grease: Use a degreaser on the stove and range hood regularly to manage cooking oils and keep the air filter clean.
- Daily wipe-down: Keep the sink, toilet, and shower surfaces dry and clean using a mild bathroom cleaner.
- Ventilation: Always run the vent fan while showering to minimize humidity and prevent mold and mildew growth.
- Tank treatment: Use RV-specific holding tank chemicals to break down waste and paper, and to control odors.
- Floors: Sweep or vacuum the floors frequently, especially if you track in dirt from outside. A small, portable vacuum is ideal for tight spaces.
- Upholstery: Spot clean spills on seating and mattresses immediately. Occasionally, vacuum soft furnishings to remove dust and pet hair.
- Window treatments: Dust or wipe down blinds and curtains, as they are magnets for dust.
The exterior of your RV takes a beating from the elements and road grime. Keeping it clean is vital for protecting the finish and seals.
Washing and WaxingStep | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Full Exterior Wash | Monthly or as needed | Use an RV-specific soap and a long-handle brush. |
Roof Cleaning | Every 3 months | Inspect and clean the roof to prevent black streaks down the sides. |
Wax or Sealant Application | Every 6 months | Protects the paint and fiberglass from UV rays and road debris. |
- Tires and wheels: Clean the wheels to remove brake dust, and check the tire sidewalls for any caked-on mud.
- Undercarriage: If traveling in muddy or salty conditions, spray down the undercarriage to prevent rust and corrosion.
For an annual or seasonal deep clean, consider these additional tasks:
- A/C filters: Clean or replace the air conditioner filters to ensure optimal performance and air quality.
- Storage compartments: Empty, clean, and reorganize all external and internal storage bays.
- Awning care: Fully extend and clean the awning on both sides. Allow it to dry completely before retracting to avoid mildew.
