RV Utilities Hookup Guide

rvhookupstips

This guide provides essential tips for safely and effectively connecting your Recreational Vehicle (RV) to utilities at a campsite. Proper hookup is crucial for a comfortable and trouble-free stay.

I. Water Hookup

Connecting to the campsite's water source is typically the first step.

A. Preparation

Before connecting the hose, ensure the water source is clean and functional.

  • Use a Drinking-Water Safe Hose: Only use hoses specifically rated for drinking water. Never use a standard garden hose.
  • Water Pressure Regulator: Always attach a water pressure regulator to the spigot. High water pressure can damage your RV's plumbing system.
  • Sanitation: Briefly flush the spigot with water before attaching your equipment to clear out any debris.
B. Connection Procedure
  1. Attach the pressure regulator to the campground spigot.
  2. Attach the water filter (if using) to the regulator's outlet.
  3. Connect the drinking-water safe hose to the filter and the city water inlet on your RV.
  4. Slowly turn on the spigot and check for leaks at all connection points.

II. Electrical Hookup

Connecting to shore power must be done safely to protect your RV's electrical systems.

A. Safety First
  • Breaker Off: Ensure the campsite power pedestal breaker is in the "OFF" position before plugging in.
  • Surge Protector: Always use an RV-specific electrical surge protector or Electrical Management System (EMS) and plug it into the pedestal first. This protects against voltage spikes and low-voltage situations.
B. Connection Procedure

Below is a brief workflow for connecting the electric.

Check

1

Plug in the surge protector/EMS to the pedestal.

Verify it runs its diagnostic and lights turn green.

2

Plug the RV power cord into the surge protector/EMS.

Ensure the connection is secure.

3

Flip the pedestal breaker to the "ON" position.

Confirm power is flowing by checking lights inside the RV.

III. Sewer Hookup

The sewer connection must be handled hygienically and in the correct order.

A. Essential Equipment
  • Sewer Hose: Use a durable hose that extends easily.
  • Support: A sloped sewer hose support is highly recommended to ensure proper drainage.
  • Gloves: Always wear disposable gloves for this procedure.
B. Connection Procedure

Properly securing the sewer hose is critical before opening the tank valves.

  • Secure Connection: Firmly attach the sewer hose adapter to the RV's waste outlet and the terminal at the disposal site.
  • Drain Black Tank: Only open and drain the black tank (toilet waste) first.
  • Rinse and Drain Gray Tank: After the black tank is empty, close its valve, and open the gray tank (sink/shower water) valve to rinse the hose.
  • Close and Store: Close both valves tightly. Disconnect and store the hose properly.

IV. Propane and Other Utilities

For RVs with integrated propane systems, a few checks are necessary.

  • Propane Check: Ensure the main shut-off valve on the propane tank is open for appliances like the water heater and refrigerator to function.
  • Leveling: Use leveling blocks as necessary to ensure the RV is level. This is important for refrigerator operation and comfortable living.
