The concept of traveling and living on the road has roots in horse-drawn carriages and specialized wagons. The advent of the automobile provided the ideal platform for true RV development.
Key Milestones- Late 1800s: Early prototypes of recreational travel, often custom-built, horse-drawn "living wagons" (forerunners to travel trailers) are documented, particularly in Europe.
- 1910: The first RV-like vehicle, known as the "Touring Landau," was built by Pierce-Arrow. It included a rear compartment with a sink, toilet, and folding beds.
- 1915: The first production travel trailer, the "Auto-Kamp Trailer," was manufactured.
