RV Tips - Setting Up Camp
Selecting the Perfect Spot
When you arrive at your destination, the first step is to choose the best site.
- Check Accessibility: Ensure the site is large enough for your RV and any slide-outs. Look for clear paths to avoid low-hanging branches or other obstacles.
- Evaluate Leveling: A level site is essential for proper RV function (refrigerators, drainage). Look for the most level area before positioning.
- Proximity to Utilities: Note the location of electric, water, and sewer hookups. Position your RV so that your hookup connections can reach easily.
- Consider Sun and Shade: If it's a hot day, look for shade. If it's cold, positioning for morning sun can be beneficial.
A quick and easy setup makes a huge difference.
Pre-Positioning ChecklistStep | Action | Tools/Notes |
|---|---|---|
Approach | Drive slowly and watch for obstacles | Have a spotter outside the RV |
Alignment | Align your RV with hookups and desired view | Ensure your door side is facing the main camp area |
Initial Assessment | Check side-to-side level | Use a small level on the floor or counter |
Use leveling blocks or an automatic leveling system to ensure the RV is stable and level.
- Side-to-Side: This must be done first. Drive onto leveling blocks before unhitching (for travel trailers) or engaging the parking brake.
- Front-to-Back: Use the tongue jack (for travel trailers) or front/rear leveling jacks to adjust the front-to-back tilt.
- Stabilizers: Once level, lower your stabilizer jacks. Remember, these are for stability, not for leveling.
Safely connect all utilities to your RV.
Electrical Hookup- Turn off the campground breaker.
- Plug your power cord into the pedestal.
- If using a surge protector or Electrical Management System (EMS), plug that into the pedestal first.
- Flip the breaker back on.
- Check your RV's internal power monitor to ensure the voltage is correct.
- Attach a water pressure regulator to the spigot. This protects your RV plumbing.
- Connect your fresh water hose to the regulator.
- Connect the other end of the hose to your RV's city water inlet.
- Turn on the water slowly and check for leaks.
- Ensure your black and gray tank valves are closed.
- Attach the sewer hose to your RV's waste outlet.
- Secure the other end of the hose to the sewer drain at the campsite.
- Use a sewer hose support (often required by campgrounds) to create a downhill slope for flow.
The camp is set! Now for the fun stuff.
- Slide-Outs: Extend your slide-outs. Check for any obstructions first.
- Awning: Extend the awning for shade and rain protection.
- Outside Area: Set up chairs, tables, and any outdoor cooking equipment.
- Review Checklist: Double-check that all steps are complete before relaxing at the campsite.
