RV Tips - Waste System (Black and Gray Tanks)

Black Water Tank

This tank holds sewage and toilet paper waste from the RV toilet. It is the most critical tank to manage correctly to prevent clogs and odor issues.

Gray Water Tank

This tank collects wastewater from your sinks and shower. While less of a biohazard than the black tank, it can still produce unpleasant odors if left too long, and should be emptied regularly.

Dumping Procedure

It is recommended to always empty the black tank first, followed by the gray tank. The gray water helps rinse the sewer hose, removing any residual black tank waste.

Preparation

1. Locate the Dump Station: Ensure you are at a designated and approved RV dump station. Never dump your tanks anywhere else.
2. Gather Supplies: Put on protective gloves. You will need a sewer hose and the necessary fittings.
3. Position the Hose: Securely attach one end of the sewer hose to the RV's waste outlet and the other end to the dump station inlet.

Step 1: Empty the Black Tank

1. Open the Valve: Pull the black tank valve handle all the way out. You will hear and see the contents flowing through the sewer hose.
2. Monitor Flow: Wait until the flow slows down significantly and appears to be mostly liquid.
3. Rinse (If Available): If your RV is equipped with a tank flush system, connect a non-potable water hose to the inlet and run water through the system for a few minutes while the black valve is open.
4. Close the Valve: Push the black tank valve handle all the way in.

Step 2: Empty the Gray Tank

1. Open the Valve: Pull the gray tank valve handle all the way out. The gray water will flow through the sewer hose, flushing out any remaining black tank residue.
2. Close the Valve: Once the flow stops, push the gray tank valve handle all the way in.

Step 3: Cleanup and Storage

1. Remove the Hose: Detach the sewer hose from the dump station inlet first, then from the RV outlet.
2. Rinse the Hose: Use the dedicated non-potable water source at the dump station to rinse the inside and outside of the sewer hose.
3. Cap the Tanks: Securely place the cap back on the RV waste outlet.
4. Store the Hose: Disconnect the fittings, shake out any excess water, and store the sewer hose in its designated, sealed compartment. Never store the sewer hose near your fresh water hose.
5. Sanitize: Dispose of your gloves and use hand sanitizer or wash your hands thoroughly.

Important Tips

• Keep Black Tank Valve Closed: Only open the black tank valve when you are actively dumping. Leaving it open will cause solids to pile up, leading to the dreaded "poop pyramid" and serious clogs.
• Use Plenty of Water: Always use enough water when flushing the toilet to ensure solids move efficiently to the tank. The black tank should be at least two-thirds full before dumping for the best results.
• Tank Treatments: Use RV-safe chemicals or enzyme treatments in both tanks to help break down solids and control odors. Add a small amount of water and treatment immediately after dumping.
• Toilet Paper: Only use RV-specific or septic-safe toilet paper that dissolves quickly.
