This document provides a comprehensive checklist for properly winterizing and de-winterizing your RV to protect it from cold weather and prepare it for the warmer seasons. Following these steps will help ensure the longevity of your RV's systems and prevent costly damage.
Winterization ChecklistWater System- Drain freshwater tank: Open all faucets (hot and cold) and flush the toilet until the water stops flowing.
- Bypass hot water heater: Locate the bypass valve and turn it to bypass the hot water heater. This prevents antifreeze from entering the heater.
- Drain hot water heater: Remove the drain plug from the hot water heater to empty it completely.
- Pump RV antifreeze into the system: Using an RV winterizing kit, pump non-toxic RV antifreeze into the city water connection until red/pink fluid comes out of all faucets and the toilet.
- Pour antifreeze down drains: Pour a cup of antifreeze down each sink drain and the shower drain to protect the P-traps.
- Close all faucets and toilet flush valve.
- Remove all food and perishables: Empty the refrigerator and freezer, and clean them thoroughly. Leave the doors slightly ajar to prevent mold and mildew.
- Disconnect propane tanks: Turn off and disconnect propane tanks. Store them in a safe, ventilated area.
- Remove batteries: Disconnect and remove all batteries from the RV (chassis and house batteries). Store them in a cool, dry place and keep them charged throughout the winter.
- Cover exterior vents and openings: Use appropriate covers to prevent pests from entering the RV.
- Close all windows and vents.
- Wash and wax exterior: Clean the RV thoroughly to protect the paint during storage.
- Cover tires: Protect tires from UV damage by covering them.
- Inflate tires to recommended pressure: This helps prevent flat spots during storage.
- Consider an RV cover: A breathable RV cover can protect your RV from the elements.
- Flush RV antifreeze: Open all faucets (hot and cold) and flush the toilet until the antifreeze is completely flushed out and clear water runs through.
- Reconnect hot water heater: Close the bypass valve on the hot water heater.
- Fill hot water heater: Open the hot water heater drain plug and close it once water starts to come out.
- Sanitize freshwater tank: Add a sanitizing solution (e.g., bleach and water) to the freshwater tank, fill it, and let it sit for a few hours. Drain and flush thoroughly with fresh water.
- Check for leaks: Inspect all water lines and connections for any leaks after flushing the system.
- Reinstall batteries: Reconnect and reinstall all batteries.
- Reconnect propane tanks: Reconnect and open propane tanks. Check for leaks using a leak detector solution.
- Check all appliances: Turn on and test all appliances (refrigerator, stove, furnace, water heater) to ensure they are functioning correctly.
- Clean interior: Thoroughly clean the interior of the RV.
- Open windows and vents: Allow fresh air to circulate throughout the RV.
- Remove RV cover (if used): Remove any exterior covers.
- Inspect tires: Check tire pressure and inspect for any signs of wear or damage.
- Check exterior seals and seams: Inspect all seals and seams for cracks or deterioration. Reseal as needed.
- Check lights and signals: Ensure all exterior lights and turn signals are working properly.
